After having three kids in the past 5 years, the extra pounds on my 5’5 frame were becoming a burden. I must lose weight.
Like many people, I tried various diets, such as Atkins, cider vinegar diet, cabbage soup diet. Yes, all these diets worked and I did lose weight, but their rules became rather unbearable after a short while. All these diet plans permitted me to eat only certain kinds of food, and I missed my favorite foods so much that soon I felt deprived to lose fat. Of course, some people do very well on these diet plans, and they lose weight, and even feel that these diets make them healthier. But most of us are not fortunate enough to fall into these exceptions.
I got a little creative and devised my own plan. My plan took care of both eating calories and burning calories. It worked! I lost more than 80 lbs over a year. But what I was most proud of is my firm muscle tone.
This is how I did it
I fed my baby at 6 am every morning and began my aerobic workouts by 6:30 am. To prevent myself from getting bored, I used 2 different workout videos.
I ate 5 to 6 times in small portions throughout the day. I was careful with the portion sizes. I actually measured them. My total daily calorie consumption ranged from 1200 to 1500 calories.
After my workouts, I took the kids to the playground to play with them. Then we took a 30-minute walk, with my baby strapped to my chest while pushing the other two in a stroller.
Besides doing housework, I danced around the living room. Sometimes my kids wanted to dance with me, and I would have a toddler on each hip.
I also set up 2 activities for working out in the evening. On alternate days, I would do calisthenics exercises with free weights, or take a 30-min brisk walk. As I got stronger, I increased the weights and the number of repititions.
Surprise! Surprise!! It Worked!
One of the most satisfying moments was when I would put on a pair of jeans only to find that it’s too large for my waist.
To lose fat, you’ve got to burn calories. So, get active, and burn and burn! Count your calories. Eat 4 to 5 small meals a day.
Oh, I nearly forgot to mention this: I didn’t want to make myself feel deprived. So, every Saturday and Sunday I put aside my diet regime and ate the foods I enjoyed, but… only in moderate portions. I didn’t think about calories, BUT I did watch my portion sizes carefully. People who eat consistent amounts (as opposed to more on some days and less on others) are 1.5 times more likely to maintain their weight.
If a life-long butterball like me can lose fat, so can you, surely
